Criminal Records Bureau checks are there to validate paid staff and volunteers for their work with children, young people and vulnerable adults. They are a legal requirement and should be seen as an integral part of any Safeguarding policy and as such should be renewed in line with that policy and for every new post that is taken up.

In addition to the work of the Criminal Records Bureau the government has asked for a new additional body to assist in the overall safeguarding process, this is the Independant Safeguarding Authority, I.S.A. for short.
The I.S.A. became operational October 09. and is moving towards initial compliance by July 2010
Everyone working with children, young people and vulunerable adults will be required to register with this body in addition to the C.R.B.
Employers will have a period of 4 years to complete the necessary registrations at a cost of £64.00 per paid person ( this includes the cost of a C.R.B.) plus any administration charge made by umberella bodies. For volunteers there is no charge by the I.S.A. but there may well be an administration charge from operating bodies.
